56 INT. PLANE - MED. SHORT - FLETCH

HE wakes as the plane hits the runway.

CINDY MAY
You made it, Mr. Notre Dame.

57 EXT. THIBODAUX AIRPORT - THE TARMAC - DAY

Waiting for Fletch is the lovely, stylish Amanda Ray Ross. Fletch, carrying a briefcase, is pleasantly surprised as he meets her by a cyclone fence where passengers disembark from his 727.

AMANDA RAY
Mr. Fletcher...

FLETCH
Yes.

AMANDA RAY
I'm Amanda Ray Ross.

Fletch is pleasantly surprised and slightly dumbfounded.

AMANDA RAY
(continuing)
I spoke to you on the phone.

FLETCH
(surprised to be met)
Yes. That was you? Well, Thanks for meeting me.

AMANDA RAY
Do you have luggage?

FLETCH
Just one piece.
(holds up claim ticket)

CUT TO:

58 EXT. AIRPORT - TIGHT ON A HAND

ripping the claim ticket from the trunk in the rear of Amanda Ray's car.

CAMERA WIDEN as car drives away.

Strapped to the trunk are skies, a tennis racket, and a stereo.

AMANDA RAY
Your first trip South?

FLETCH
Yep. Except for that time with Sherman.

AMANDA RAY
(smiles)
Planning to stay long?

FLETCH
Just until there is no more injustice in the world.

59 EXT. AMANDA RAY'S BMW CONVERTABLE - RUN BY - DAY

They drive on a freeway over the bayou.

60 INT. CAR - FULL SHOT

Fletch checking the scenery.

FLETCH
Are we heading to Belle Isle?

AMANDA RAY
You must be dying to see it, Mr. Fletcher.

FLETCH
Call me Fletch.

AMANDA RAY
Did you know that Belle Isle is one of the homes
in the area with major historical significance?
It is a designated landmark.

FLETCH
That's an extra added bonus.

61 - POV MOVING PAST GLORIOUS ANTEBELLUM MANSIONS

AMANDA RAY (V.O.)
I'm on the board of the "Pontchartrain
Society". We helped to preserve and restore
some of these lovely mansions.

FLETCH
That's nice, too.

62 INT. CAR

Amanda Ray turns the car off the main road. Fletch peers through the windshield. He begins singing "Zip A Dee Doo Dah".

AMANDA RAY
Now, your house is not quite as grand as some of
the others in the neighborhood.

FLETCH
Doesn't matter. It's the thought
that counts. Eighty acres, eh?

63 HIS POV

The oaks from his dream are right, but the foliage is thick and untrimmed. Suddenly up ahead Fletch sees a mansion that has truly fallen apart. The gardens are overgrown.

64 INT. CAR

AMANDA RAY
You aunt tried to keep things in
their natural state.

FLETCH
Ever brush her hair?

65 FULL SHOT - CAR - DAY

The car pulls to the front of the old house and stops. Fletch gets out and looks around. She joins him.

AMANDA RAY
I hope you're not disappointed.

FLETCH
Oh no. Not at all. With a little paint, some
Miracle Gro and some dynamite you could turn this
into a nice parking lot.

AMANDA RAY
Surely you can see some possibilities here.

FLETCH

He walks up the steps and a board collapses.

66 NEW ANGLE - HOUSE

As Fletch picks himself up, a black MAN appears from the corner of the house. He seems to belong to another century.

CALCULUS
I was aimin' to fix that today. How do
you do? I be Calculus Entterby. You be
Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher?

FLETCH
I be Fletch...Geometry Fletch. She be...
Miss Trigonomery Ross.

CALCULUS
Pleased. I'm sure. Your aunt told me
you'd be taking over the place. I'm
extending my condolations.

FLETCH
Right. You work here?

CALCULUS
(unloading Fletch's trunk)
Your aunt and I, we had an arrangement
that goes way back and I was hoping we
could make an extenuation of it. You see
our families go back for hundreds of years.
Your great-grandparents owned my great-
grandparents...That's how it started.

FLETCH
(not buying this)
You ever hear of the Emancipation Proclamation?

CALCULUS
(scratching his head)
I heard something about it, bit I don't recall
exactly. It didn't get too much publicity around
these parts.

FLETCH
I'll bet.

67 INT. BELLE ISLE

Leaving the trunk outside, they enter and survey the place. Fletch leans on something which collapses under him.

AMANDA
Is there any electricity...or

CALCULUS
Everything works.

FLETCH
No cable TV, I guess.

CALCULUS
If I'd known you was coming, I'd have
straightened up a bit and stocked a
refrigerator.

FLETCH
You mean there's no food?

CALCULUS
No refrigerator.

AMANDA RAY
Want a lift into town?

FLETCH
What...and leave my estate unattended.

AMANDA RAY
It's not yours until you sign some documents.
I can make you some dinner to ease the culture shock.

FLETCH
That sounds great.

CALCULUS
Should I be doing anything?

FLETCH
(thinking it over)
Not really. While I'm gone into town, I want
you to make sure the cotton gets picked, help miss
Scarlet into her corset, and don't let the Union
Army through the gate.

CALCULUS
(pleased as punch)
Yes...suh!
